AI in health care is not limited by what the technology can do but by how effectively it is led, integrated, and trusted across complex systems. The real challenge lies in aligning data, workflows, clinical priorities, and organizational decision-making. Organizations that succeed will be those whose leaders can bring these elements together and embed AI into how care is delivered, rather than treating AI in health care as a standalone technology initiative. As AI adoption accelerates across health care and life sciences, the ability to translate AI solutions into measurable clinical, operational, and organizational outcomes is emerging as a critical leadership differentiator.
The four-month AI Leadership in Health Care program, offered by Michigan Ross Executive Education and Michigan Medicine, is delivered jointly by faculty from the Ross School of Business and the Medical School at the University of Michigan. This program is designed to equip senior leaders with capabilities in AI strategy, clinical innovation, and data governance. Through an integrated focus on AI strategy, data and clinical realities, economics, governance, and health care leadership, this program prepares participants to lead across these areas. Delivered through self-paced online sessions and live online sessions, along with a five-day on-campus immersion featuring decision labs, real-world case discussions, and experiential learning, you will develop the judgment, confidence, and cross-functional alignment needed to lead enterprise-wide AI initiatives in complex health care environments.
Examine how AI in health care is influencing care delivery, operations, and decision-making, and learn how leaders can translate AI solutions into measurable impact across the health system and patient care.
Understand how data strategy, infrastructure, and interoperability support AI adoption, enabling data-driven decision-making and effective AI implementation in health care environments.
Explore how to align AI for health care with organizational priorities, evaluate opportunities, and drive value across clinical and operational contexts while strengthening health care leadership.
Examine the ethical, regulatory, and governance considerations shaping AI technologies and their application in health care, including accountability, risk, and responsible use.
The program will empower you to:
Build an AI-Driven Strategic Perspective: Interpret how AI is reshaping health care, care models, and value creation.
Understand the AI Landscape: Assess the current landscape of AI adoption across health care and life sciences.
Assess AI’s Impact: Analyze how AI is advancing novel therapeutics, care models, system and organizational redesign, and value creation.
Strengthen AI Capabilities and Readiness: Evaluate AI, data, and digital capabilities through strategic, clinical, operational, and governance lenses.
Translate AI Strategy into Leadership Action: Integrate strategy, technology, economics, and responsible AI leadership into executive decision-making.
Improve Decision-Making: Make more informed decisions about investments, prioritization, and resource allocation.
Drive Organizational Alignment: Lead cross-functional alignment and organizational readiness for change.
Enhance Risk Awareness: Distinguish between AI opportunities, limitations, and implementation risks in health care environments.
The four-month learning journey follows this structure:
Self-Paced Online Learning: Access foundational materials, explore key AI concepts, and reflect on their implications for health care strategy, organizational readiness, and implementation.
Live Online Sessions: Engage in six faculty- and practitioner-led sessions covering AI in health care, digital transformation, data and analytics, strategic execution, and responsible AI leadership.
Applied Learning and Case Discussions: Examine real-world health care AI cases and organizational challenges to connect strategic concepts with clinical, operational, and leadership decisions.
Capstone Project: Bring a real AI opportunity from your organization and develop an evidence-informed, funding-ready strategic proposal addressing value creation, investment, governance, and implementation.
Five-Day On-Campus Immersion: Participate in decision labs, simulations, executive discussions, and applied learning experiences at the University of Michigan campus in Ann Arbor, Michigan, integrating AI strategy with clinical realities, financial analysis, and organizational leadership.
Bring a real AI initiative into the program. Work through real health care AI cases and perspectives from leaders, then apply them directly to your initiative with faculty and peer feedback.
